The Emergence of Classical Archaeology and its Impact on Contemporary Archaeological Studies

e Department of Archaeology at the college of Archaeology held a panel today, Tuesday, March 11, 2025, in Dr. Bahnam Abu Al-Suf Hall, entitled (The Emergence of Classical Archaeology and its Impact on Contemporary Archaeological Studies), delivered by the lecturer Dr. Omar Jassim Fadel
The nature of Classical Archaeology was reviewed as one of the basic branches of archaeology, which focuses on the study of the Greek and Roman civilizations; and the historical stages of the emergence and development of this specialization in Europe were traced, starting from its emergence as an independent scientific branch during the Renaissance, through its development in the Age of Enlightenment and the nineteenth century, and reaching its modern transformations in the following centuries. It also sheds light on the pivotal role that this specialization played in revealing the material culture of those ancient civilizations and its impact on contemporary archaeological studies. It raises several main questions, including: What is classical archaeology? What are the main historical stages that contributed to its emergence and development? What are the theoretical and methodological transformations that this discipline has witnessed? And how has this affected contemporary archaeological studies? In addition, discussing the contemporary challenges facing classical archaeology in the twenty-first century.
