Zubaida and Her Role in Establishing the Hajj Route: A Workshop

As part of the activities of the College of Archaeology, and under the supervision and guidance of the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Yasmin Abdul Karim Muhammad Ali, the Women’s Affairs Committee, in cooperation with the Women’s Affairs Unit, organized a scientific workshop entitled “Zubaida and Her Role in Establishing the Hajj Route – A Reading on the Role of Women in Preserving Archaeological Heritage.” The workshop was attended by a number of female faculty members and staff of the College of Archaeology. The workshop discussed the leading role of Lady Zubaida through her financing and supervision of a massive project to pave the “Zubaida Road” from Kufa to Mecca, and the establishment of essential infrastructure along its length, including wells, reservoirs, houses, and rest stops. She also oversaw the construction of “Ain Zubaida,” which brought water from the Kura Mountains to Mecca and the holy sites, thus facilitating the provision of water for pilgrims.
