The College of Archaeology Discusses Metaphor in the Akkadian Language

The Department of Archaeology/College of Archaeology/University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis entitled “Metaphor in the Akkadian Language – A Comparative Study” on Tuesday 7/January/2025. Part of the viva was attended by the Assistant President of the University of Mosul for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Munir Salem Taha Al-Badrani, and the Dean of the College of Archaeology, Professor Dr. Yasmine Abdul Karim Muhammad Ali.
The master’s thesis submitted by the student Ali Jamal Ali aimed to identify the images of metaphor in expressing meanings in cuneiform texts written in the Akkadian language, while emphasizing the close relationship between the Akkadian and Arabic languages ​​in this aspect of the statement. The thesis dealt with the types of metaphor, including what is called “mental metaphor” with an analysis of metaphor and extended metaphor.
The thesis concluded that there is a great similarity between the two languages ​​in the use of metaphor in the language, which reinforces the hypothesis of a common origin on the one hand, and the originality of the Arabic language on the other hand.
The viva committee was headed by Prof. Dr. Abdullah Ali Muhammad, Assistant President of Kirkuk University for Scientific Affairs, and the membership of Prof. Dr. Amin Abdul Nafi Amin and Lecturer Dr. Abdul Sattar Ahmed Hussein, and the membership and supervision of Prof. Dr. Zuhair Diaa Al-Din Saeed.
