Sustainable Development
Sustainable Development in the college of Archaeology
What does sustainability mean?
Sustainability is an environmental term that describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. For humans, sustainability is the ability to maintain our quality of life over the long term, which in turn depends on the conservation of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources.
The term sustainability has become broad and can be applied to virtually every aspect of life on Earth, from the local to the global level and over various timescales. Wetlands and intact forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. Hidden biogeochemical cycles redistribute water, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon in the world’s living and nonliving systems, ensuring sustainable life for millions of years. However, as the human population has increased, natural ecosystems have declined, and the shift in the balance of natural cycles has had a negative impact on both humans and other living systems.
Typical Components of the Concept of Sustainability
There are several models and components of the concept of sustainability. These models include:
Institutional Sustainability:
This model pertains to government agencies. This model describes government institutions as organizational structures capable of fulfilling their role in providing community services that are appropriate for humankind, thereby achieving the true role of sustainability. This model also relates to non-governmental organizations and institutions that specialize in civil society, as they strive for community development while seeking to engage with the private sector.
Economic Sustainability:
This refers to the inclusion of policies that ensure the continuity of economic activities related to society and that lead to development in the agricultural and rural environment. This concept is economically applicable and culturally appropriate.
Environmental Sustainability:
This refers to the ability of the environment to continue functioning properly while minimizing environmental degradation. This concept of sustainability can be achieved when planning development to minimize damage to natural capital.

Sustainable Development Goals SDGs
The United Nations General Assembly established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, with a target date of 2030. They represent a roadmap for a better and more sustainable future. The SDGs comprise 17 interconnected goals and are part of a UN resolution called the “2030 Agenda.” The SDGs include four core pillars: environment, social development, economic development, and partnerships. The unique feature of the SDGs is that they are the first agreement to which 193 UN Member States worldwide have committed. Each UN Member State is required to develop a national action plan outlining its future plans for implementing the SDGs.
The SDGs represent a broad global agenda that requires close collaboration between the public and private sectors, including the entire community, to develop and implement strategies that enhance quality of life in a sustainable manner. They provide specific goals and guidelines for all UN Member States to incorporate into their national action plans, focusing on the environmental challenges facing the world.
