Master’s thesis in the department of Translation about the application of Venuti’s translation strategies to the translation of the novel “Heart of Darkness”

The Department of Translation at the College of Arts held a viva for master’s thesis entitled “THE APPLICATION OF VENUTI’S TRANSLATION STRATEGIES TO THE TRANSLATION OF THE NOVEL “HEART OF DARKNESS”,” on (Sunday), January 16, 2022 in the hall of College of Arts. The thesis submitted by the student (Nada Bashar Abdulhadi) in the Department of Translation, dealt with the application of Venuti’s translation strategies in translating the novel “Heart of Darkness” into Arabic. The translation works to bridge the gap between two cultures in two different languages because misunderstanding the culture of the source language may cause Poor translation, especially in translating a literary text. The current study aims to apply Venotti’s strategies in translation (1995) of Joseph Conrad’s novel “Heart of Darkness” from English into Arabic, and to determine which of them are the most common and adopted by translators in the above novel, and to investigate the main problems found in the translation of the novel to determine whether the translations are appropriate or not.The study hypothesizes that the translation of literary texts, especially figurative images, causes problems for translators. Therefore, translators need to carefully investigate figurative language expressions related to literary language such as simile, metaphor, irony….etc. To verify the validity of these hypotheses, the study adopts the application of venoty strategies: domestication and alienation. The study concluded that the difference in culture and language between the Arabic and English languages, especially in the field of literature, may show many problems in the translation process, so the translator must decide which strategy or method to adopt to bridge this gap and convey the meaning effectively. The viva committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman Ahmed Abdul Rahman, with the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Ismail Abdul Wahab Ismail from Al Noor University College, and Assistant Professor Laith Nofal Muhammad, and under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Mai Makram Abdul Aziz from the College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul.
