M. A. thesis in the Department of Translation on the application of Vinay and Darbelnet model to translating the names of Quranic Surahs into English.
The Department of Translation at the College of Arts held a viva for a Master of Arts thesis entitled “The Application of Vinay and Darbelnet Model to Translating the Names of Quranic Surahs into English,” on August 23, 2021 at the College’s Hall. The thesis submitted by the student (Safwan Hamid Safi) in the Department of Translation dealt with the translation of the names of the Holy Qur’an surahs, which are considered as the title of the text. This is what should happen when translating the names of the surahs of the Noble Qur’an.The study touched on the Finney and Darblane linguistic model to apply it in translating the names of the surahs (the subject of the study). This model was chosen with the assumption that it can be applied due to the various methods that include the diversity of the names of the surahs. The model contains seven main implicit methods that fit the differences in the text and its meanings. The study concluded that the applied model is largely successful in the subject of the study, with notes here and there that address the gaps of the model and suggest justified scientific corrections. In addition, the study was supplemented with future suggestions that could be taken into consideration for those who wish to research in this field of texts. The viva’s committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Salem Yahya Fathi, and the membership of both Assistant Professor Dr. Ismail Abdel Wahab Ismail and Dr. Maher Sami Hassan, under the supervision and membership of Professor Dr. Luqman Abdel Karim Nasser.
