M. A. thesis in the Department of Sociology on early widowhood of women and its social effects on Iraqi family through a field study in Nineveh Governorate
The Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts held a viva for a Master of Arts thesis entitled “Early Widowhood of Women and Its Social Effects on Iraqi Family – A Field Study in Nineveh Governorate,” on September 06, 2021 in the Department of History’s Library Hall in the Faculty of Arts.The thesis submitted by the student (Taha Khader Taha Ali) in the Department of Sociology, dealt with early widowhood of women and its social effects on Iraqi family in order to identify the most important social, economic, psychological, health and educational consequences along with the challenges that early widowhood poses to women in general and the family in Nineveh Governorate in particular.The study presented the various reasons behind early widowhood in Iraqi society, some of which are political reasons or related to wars and insecurity, others like health and social reasons.The study concluded that widowhood has different consequences on the widowed woman in particular and on family and society in general. It was also found that early widowhood has educational, psychological, social and health effects on children in addition to the financial exploitation and the negative view of society for the young widow.The viva’s committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Firas Abbas Fadel, and the membership of both Assistant Professor Dr. Khaled Mahmoud Hamy and Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Saeed Hussein from the University of Dohuk, under the supervision and membership of Professor Dr. Shafiq Ibrahim Saleh.
