The Department of Translation held a viva for an M. A. thesis on “COGNITIVE ANTICIPATION OF TRANSLATING ENGLISH CONTEXTUAL CLUES INTO ARABIC” on November 25, 2021 at the Faculty of Dentistry Hall.The thesis submitted by the student (Rahaf Qahtan Thanoun Al-Attar) in the Department of Translation, dealt with the concept of perceptual expectation, which is a potential resource for a better understanding of the mental model of the translator’s ability. This study refers to the expectation of translating English contextual clues into Arabic from a cognitive perspective.The thesis addressed the problem of the study, which is mainly represented in the diversity of the use of contextual clues, whose classification in English differs from that in Arabic, and thus is reflected in its perception in English and Arabic texts. This study also assumes that the translation of contextual clues is not just a matter of communicative linguistic blending, but rather a set of cognitive processes.The study aims to test the translators’ ability to form a contextual presumption in another language within the cognitive processes, as well as assess the translators’ ability to anticipate clues in the text in terms of contextual factors that may deviate from the meaning of the source text in the target text.The viva committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Abdul Rahman Ahmed Abdul Rahman and the membership of Prof. Dr. Shefa Hadi Hussein from Tikrit University and Assistant Professor Dr. Ethel Abdul Khaleq Saeed, and under the supervision and membership of Prof. Muhammad Nihad Ahmed from the College of Dentistry at Mosul University.
