The Department of Arabic Language at the Faculty of Arts held a viva for a master’s thesis entitled “THE POETRY OF MUHAMMAD BIN HAZEM AL-BAHILI – A STUDY IN THE LIGHT OF COGNITIVE PRAGMATICS,” on December 01, 2021 in Ibn Al-Atheer Hall of the Faculty of Arts, part of which was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afin and the head of the Department of Arabic Language, Prof. Dr. Maan Yahya Al-Abadi, with a group of faculty members and teachers. The thesis submitted by the student (Ola Hani Sabri Al Younes) in the Department of Arabic Language, dealt with the poetry of Muhammad bin Hazem Al-Bahli through a study in the light of cognitive pragmatics. Linguistic studies constitute an important space for scientific research because it allows the researcher to identify the different distributions of performance possibilities in the linguistic lesson in terms of its means and motives. The thesis dealt with Al-Bahili’s life and poetry, the two types of context (internal and external), pragmatic in its general form, and customary pragmatics in particular, in addition to the aspects of cognitive pragmatics of the ancients and moderns and their concepts. The study also sheds light on the importance of intentionality in its various manifestations and the importance of interpretation in shaping the meaning through different performance modalities. The study aimed to explain the general ideas in an initial prelude to Al-Bahili’s poetry in the light of Grace’s theory and the implication of its various types, in addition to examining the concept of cognitive pragmatics at Sperber and Wilson in their theory (the theory of relevance) in order to deduce a number of general and special rules in cognitive pragmatics and the possibility of the prevalence of this type of Pragmatics in the Arabic language lesson. The viva committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Fathi Ramadan Al-Hayani, with the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Khaled Howir Al-Shams at Dhi Qar University and Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Muhammad Ali Al Rahim, and under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Abdullah Khalif Khudair Al-Hayani. The viva, also, included a tribute to the external examiner by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
