Master’s thesis in the Department of Translation on the degree of severity in translating English expressive verbs in the novel Wuthering Heights into Arabic

The Department of Translation at the College of Arts held a viva for master’s thesis entitled “DEGREE OF STRENGTH IN TRANSLATING ENGLISH EXPRESSIVE VERBS IN “WUTHERING HEIGHTS” INTO ARABIC,” on (Thursday), December 30, 2021 in the hall of the College of Education, with the attendance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afin, the dean of the college of Arts, his Scientific Associate, Prof. Dr. Harith Hazem Ayoub and his Administrative Associate, Asst. Prof Dr. Safwan Nazim Daoud along with a number of faculty and staff members.The thesis submitted by the student (Manar Talal Hamed) in the Department of Translation, deals with the problems that translators face when translating the degree of intensity of expressive verbs from English into Arabic. The translation of these verbs in literary texts represents a problem for translators, especially the translation of verbal verbs, because they differ from one society to another and from one culture to another.The thesis aimed at studying explicit verbal verbs in different expressive texts with the possibility of applying the concept of the degree of intensity of these verbs in literary texts, knowing the translators’ ability to maintain the degree of intensity of translation of the English expressive verb when translating it into Arabic, and determining the strategies that translators follow in translating English expressive texts to grades of different severity.The study concluded that using the intensity of expressive verbs is a distinctive feature and helps in choosing the most appropriate translation. The appropriate strategy for translating expressive texts is translating the original language, and not taking the translation of the intensity of expressive verbs into consideration will result in an inappropriate translation, whether it is translated to a higher or lesser degree. In addition, some recommendations aimed at achieving educational goals were presented, and some suggestions were made for further future research.The viva committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Basil Qassem from Al-Noor University College, with the membership of Prof. Dr. Hala Khaled Negm and Assistant Professor Dr. Yasser Younis Abdel Wahed, and under the supervision and membership of Prof. Luqman Abdel Karim Nasser.
