Master’s thesis in the department of English language on ambiguity in selected Arabic literary texts
The Department of English Language at the College of Arts held a viva for master’s thesis entitled “AMBIGUITY IN SELECTED ARABIC LITERARY TEXTS,” on (Monday), January 10, 2022 in the hall of College of Arts, with the attendance of Prof. Dr. Basim Yahya Jasim, the head of the English Language department along with a number of faculty and staff members.The thesis submitted by the student (Nadia Shaker Jumaa) in the Department of English Language, dealt with the types of ambiguity in some selected Arabic literary texts, such as structural, lexical and pragmatic ambiguity, as well as other sub-genres according to Quirk, Luebner and Liege analytical models to add a flavor of excitement and create an atmosphere The thrill of the text.The study hypothesizes that Arabic literary texts have ambiguous structures of different types, the pragmatic ambiguity is the most frequent and common type of ambiguity in Arabic literary texts, sometimes, writers of Arabic literary texts unintentionally or intentionally use ambiguous expressions to add some dramatic flavor to such texts and to create an atmosphere or suspension.The study concluded that ambiguity is a common phenomenon in language which can be avoided by using context and the proper use of punctuation, pragmatic ambiguity is the most frequent and common type of ambiguity in these two novels, and the less frequent type is scope ambiguity.The viva committee was chaired by Prof. Omar Ahmed Shehab from Tikrit University, with the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Aba Muzaffar Yahya and Assistant Professor Dr. Ismail Fathi Hussein from the College of Education for Human Sciences at Mosul University, and under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Marwan Najib Tawfiq.
