PhD thesis at the Department of English Language on the use of functional stylistic approach to the study of English and Arabic argumentative discourse
The Department of English Language at the College of Arts held a viva on a doctoral thesis entitled (A FUNCTIONAL STYLISTIC APPROACH TO THE STUDY OF ENGLISH AND ARABIC ARGUMENTATIVE DISCOURSE) in February 13, 2022 on the hall of the College of Arts, attended by the head of the department of English Language, Professor Dr. Bassem Yahya Jassim along with a group of faculty members and teachers. The thesis submitted by the student (Ali Hasan Mohammad Ali) at the Department of English Language, addressed the functional style of the study of English and Arabic dialectal discourse, where the method is defined by the language choice made by the speaker for specific purposes. The study therefore includes a kind of linguistically influential expression to add a kind of advantage that makes dialectical speech influence the thoughts and attitudes of the listener to radically change their opinions rather than their knowledge of using a typical method of style and function. The study aims to determine and reflect a functional approach to research dialogues and discussions in English and Arabic. We find that the functional style approach plays an important role in the realization and application of stylistic features in different types of processes in all sections that may be associated with the purposes and requirements of the method may enable non-native English speakers. (NNES) of producing a style-appropriate argument based on differences of opinion, solution, and point of difference, leading ultimately to the ultimate goal of successful application. The study concluded that users of language use language selection to reveal their views and intentions through persuasion that may occur during the interview process. This persuasion will add a lot about their psychological state and personality. Besides, the study can be seen by contrast as evidence that the theory of English controversy has evolved from Arabic or vice versa. The panel was chaired by Prof. Dr. Nashwan Mustafa Saleh and the membership of Prof. Dr. Salem Yahya Fathi and Prof. Dr. Abbas Fadel Lutfi from Salah al-Din University, Assistant Professor Dr. Nasir Abbas Ghabin from Baghdad University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Wafa Muzaffar Ali, and under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Shefa Hadi Hussein from University of Baghdad Tikrit.
