Doctorate dissertation in the department of English Language on “Designing and Implementing a Blended Learning Course for Teaching Phonetics/Phonology at University Level”.
The Department of English Language at the College of Arts held a viva for doctorate dissertation entitled “Designing and Implementing a Blended Learning Course for Teaching Phonetics/Phonology at University Level” on (Monday), September 11, 2023 in Ibn Al-Atheer Hall at the Faculty of Arts with the attendance of the Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afeen, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Dr. Hareth Hazim Ayoub and Professor Dr. Waffaa Abdullatif Abdul’ali along with a number of faculty and staff members.
The dissertation submitted by the student (Ziyad Rakan Kasim) in the Department of English Language, dealt with the effectiveness of using Blended Learning in the field of teaching English as a foreign language.
The existing courses for teaching English as a foreign language have been designed to be implemented using traditional face-to-face practice. Consequently, they lack the flexibility to keep up with the technological advancements which can provide limitless sources for teachers and learners.
The aim of the present research is to design and implement a Blended Learning course for teaching phonetics/phonology at university level. The main research questions raised are associated with features of Blended Learning relevant to teachers of English as a foreign language, the nature and amount of the two components of Blended Learning, viz. online and face-to-face, problems of using Blended Learning by teachers, learners’ interaction with Blended Learning, and how effective Blended Learning is in implementing the designed course. The model used in designing the Blended Learning course is called ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation).
The study concluded that the designed Blended Learning course is more effective than the traditional face-to-face learning in teaching the subject of phonetics/phonology.
