Department of Sociology Visits Al-Nuri Grand Mosque

A group of faculty members from the Department of Sociology, accompanied by several students, visited the Al-Nuri Grand Mosque on Sunday, April 27, 2025. The purpose of the visit was to observe the progress of the reconstruction efforts of this historic Islamic landmark, which stands as a symbol of the city of Mosul. The mosque had been severely damaged by extremist terrorist groups during their control of Mosul in 2014.

Historical sources state that Nur al-Din Zangi ordered the construction of the mosque in the 6th century AH (12th century CE), making it nearly nine centuries old. The mosque has undergone several restorations, the most recent of which was in 1944. It is particularly famous for its eastward-leaning minaret.
