PhD Dissertation Defense: “Trends in Andalusian Studies in Spanish Orientalism: Al-Qantara Journal as a Model”

On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the History Department at the College of Arts held a PhD dissertation defense for a study titled “Trends in Andalusian Studies in Spanish Orientalism: Al-Qantara Journal as a Model.”

The study, presented by student Salih Salim Ibrahim, examines orientalist studies published in Al-Qantara Journal, which serves as an extension of the Spanish journal Al-Andalus, founded in 1933 and specializing in Arab and Islamic studies.

The dissertation aims to identify the research trends of Spanish and non-Spanish orientalists who published in Al-Qantara. This is achieved by tracing their undergraduate and postgraduate studies (Master’s and PhD), their graduating universities, and their professional affiliations. Furthermore, the study categorizes the research published in the journal into Andalusian and non-Andalusian studies, subsequently sub-dividing these by the precise specialization of the research topics.

The examining committee consisted of:

  • Professor Dr. Bashar Akram Jameel – College of Arts – University of Mosul (President)
  • Professor Dr. Zahida Mohammed Taha – College of Education – University of Duhok (Member)
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Alia Hashem Dhanoun – College of Education for Human Sciences – University of Mosul (Member)
