Thesis Defense: An Analysis of Youth Slang in Selected American Films: A Sociolinguistic Study

The Department of English at the College of Arts held a master’s thesis defense on “An Analysis of Youth Slang in Selected American Movies: A Sociolinguistic Study.” The defense took place on Monday, August 18, 2025, and was attended by Dean of the College and Head of the Department, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Ta’i, as well as a number of faculty members.

The thesis, submitted by student Yamama Haitham Yahya Al-Bazzaz of the Department of English, analyzed youth slang from a sociolinguistic perspective. The study focused on how young people use slang to construct social identity, express group affiliation, and reflect generational and gender values in cinematic discourse.

The research aimed to analyze the linguistic features of youth slang in the selected films and to explore its role in shaping identity and group belonging among young people, as well as to uncover aspects of their contemporary culture through film dialogues.
