M.A. Thesis Defense in the English Dept.
The Department of English at the College of Arts held a defense for a master’s thesis on Monday, August 25, 2025. The thesis is titled “A Pragmatic Analysis of Pun in Selected Modern English Novels.” A part of the defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Ta’i, the Head of the Department, Dr. Salih Abdullah Abdulrahman, and several faculty members.
The study, submitted by student Amna Ahmed Shawqi, analyzed the phenomenon of pun in modern English literature through selected examples from the novels “Through the Looking-Glass” and “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.”
This thesis aims to classify the types of puns in the texts and analyze their pragmatic functions using politeness theory. Additionally, it seeks to uncover the role of puns in developing the narrative and enhancing interaction between characters.
