M.A Viva conducted in the Translation Dept.

On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, the Department of Translation at the College of Arts held a master’s thesis defense for the thesis titled “Assessing the Translation of Geminate Lexemes in the Noble Quran into English.” The defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Hala Khalid Najm, and several faculty members.

The study, presented by student Amira Mohammed Fathi Sabour, aimed to evaluate English translations of geminate lexemes (doubled letters) in the Quran. The research focused on assessing the accuracy of these translations in conveying the full and often multi-layered rhetorical meanings of these words in light of modern translation theories.

The primary objective of the thesis was to evaluate existing English translations of the Quran, specifically concerning geminate words, to see how well they capture the original Arabic nuances, which can often be lost in a literal translation.
