On Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Department of Translation at the College of Arts held a master’s thesis defense for a thesis titled “Correcting the Arabic Translation of English Journalistic Texts by ChatGPT.” The defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Hala Khalid Najm, and several faculty members.
The study, presented by student Mohammed Askar Misri Al-Bayaty, applied Larson’s model to evaluate the translation output of ChatGPT.
The thesis aimed to determine how well ChatGPT’s translations preserve the semantic and stylistic qualities of the original texts. It also sought to identify common translation errors that affect communicative meaning in the Arabic language. The research further aimed to explore the role of translation correction as a remedial and enhancing process to improve the final output of ChatGPT’s translations at various levels.
