The Impact of Rumors on Peacebuilding in Iraqi Society Post-2014: A Field Study from the Perspective of University of Mosul Faculty

 

The Department of Sociology at the College of Arts recently held a defense for a Higher Diploma thesis titled “The Impact of Rumors on Peacebuilding in Iraqi Society Post-2014: A Field Study from the Perspective of University of Mosul Faculty.”

The defense took place on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, was present for a portion of the session.

The study, presented by student Rahma Abdulaziz Taha Al-Azzawi of the Sociology Department, focused on rumors and their repercussions for peacebuilding after 2014. Specifically, it addressed the mechanisms of their spread, methods of resistance, various types of rumors, strategies for their detection, and countermeasures.

The primary objectives of this research were to:

  • Define the concept of rumors.
  • Identify the relevant academic literature concerning rumors.
  • Ascertain the extent and degree of the impact of rumors on the peacebuilding process after 2014.
