Higher Diploma Examines Human Rights and Peacebuilding in Contemporary Iraqi Society: A Field Study in Mosul, Iraq

The Department of Sociology at the College of Arts debated a Higher Diploma thesis titled: “The Reality of Human Rights and Its Reflections on the Process of Peacebuilding in Contemporary Iraqi Society—A Field Study from the Perspective of Citizens in the City of Mosul.”

The defense was held on Sunday, October 19, 2025, and was attended by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Firas Abbas Fadhel, and several faculty members.

The study, submitted by student Furqan Jasim Mohammed, focused on understanding the actual status of human rights, which constitutes one of the most crucial factors determining the future of peacebuilding in Iraq in general, and Mosul in particular. This focus is vital given the gross violations the city endured during the period of terrorist group control and the ensuing security, economic, and social challenges.

The research’s primary objective is to identify and illuminate the current reality of human rights in Iraqi society by reviewing the relevant legal and legislative frameworks.
