Historical Immersion: History Department Students Conduct Field Visit to Mosul’s ancient Mosques

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, organized an academic field visit for its students, accompanied by several faculty members and supervised by Head of Department Professor Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed.

The tour included several of Mosul’s historic mosques—namely Al-Nabi Jirjis Mosque, Al-Musaffi Mosque, and Al-Shalji Mosque—as part of the activities related to the subjects of Islamic History and Islamic Civilization.

During the visit, students examined the historical and architectural aspects of these mosques, the reconstruction and restoration efforts they have undergone, and their religious and social roles in the lives of Mosul’s residents. Special emphasis was placed on their heritage value and standing in the city’s collective memory.

The visit was intended to link theoretical studies with fieldwork, develop students’ heritage awareness, enhance their observation and architectural analysis skills, and deepen their sense of belonging to the identity and history of Mosul. The students responded positively, emphasizing the importance of repeating such visits for their significant academic and educational impact on shaping the historian’s character.
