The Department of Translation at the College of Arts held a PhD dissertation defense on “The Application of Iceberg Theory to the Translation of Stable and Dynamic Elements in English Literary Texts into Arabic” on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

The session was attended in part by Professor Dr. Hatim Fahd Hano, Dean of the College, Dr. Hala Khalid Najm, Head of the Department, and several faculty members.

The dissertation, submitted by student Atheel Abdulkhaliq Saeed from the Department of Translation, addressed the application of Edward T. Hall’s Iceberg Theory of Culture to the translation of stable and dynamic elements in English literary texts.

The study aims to prove its hypothesis by demonstrating the applicability of the Iceberg Theory to literary translation. It highlights that dynamic elements, often rich in cultural references and figurative meanings, reside in the hidden (implicit) layer of cultural understanding.
