Master’s Thesis on Student Overcrowding and its Impact on Academic Achievement

On Monday, May 29, 2025, the Department of Sociology at the College of Arts held a master’s thesis defense titled “Student Overcrowding and its Impact on Academic Achievement: A Social Field Study in Governmental Schools in Mosul City.” The defense was attended by Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Firas Abbas Fadhel, Head of the Department, and several faculty members.
The study, presented by student Hassan Mohsen Ali from the Sociology Department, addressed a significant educational and social issue in Mosul’s schools: student overcrowding and its effect on academic performance. The increasing number of students in classrooms has become a challenge to creating an effective learning environment.
This research aimed to identify the causes of student overcrowding in schools, the consequences of this phenomenon on students and their academic attainment, and its impact on the educational environment for all members of the educational institution.
