Faculty Member Publishes Book on Translation Strategies: Possibility and Necessity

A new book by Dr. Luqman Abdul Kareem Nasser, a faculty member in the Department of Translation at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, has been published by Noor Publishing House in Germany. The book delves into the concepts of “possibility and necessity in translation” as an entry point for understanding decision-making mechanisms in translation practice.

The publication primarily focuses on leveraging prior contributions in translation studies that have addressed the dual nature of translation strategies using various terminologies. The author proposes a conceptual framework based on these two terms for selecting the most appropriate translation strategy.

Dr. Nasser elucidates that “possibility” refers to a scenario where the translator can employ a strategy closely aligned with the source language when a linguistic equivalent is available in the target language, thereby allowing for the preservation of the original text’s structure. Conversely, “necessity” denotes a situation that compels the translator to deviate from the source language due to the absence of a suitable equivalent, necessitating greater intervention from the translator to produce a text that aligns with the specific characteristics of the target language and culture.

This publication represents a valuable scholarly addition to translation studies, endeavoring to foster a deeper understanding of the linguistic choices confronting translators as they navigate between the precision of transfer and the imperatives of cultural adaptation.
