The Department of Translation at College of Arts held a viva for a Master of Arts thesis entitled “PROBLEMS OF TRANSLATING SARCASM IN SOME VERSES OF THE QLORIOUS QURAN INTO ENGLISH,” on September 15, 2021 in the Hall of College of Arts with the attendance of Prof. Dr. Abdulrahman Ahmed Abdulrahman along with some of the college’s teachers.The M. A. thesis submitted by the student (Mohammad Maan Mamdouh Ahmed) in the Department of Translation, dealt with problems of translating sarcasm in some verses of the Glorious Qur’an into English, as it relied on analyzing the rhetorical meanings of sarcasm in the Glorious Qur’an and translated texts in an attempt to find a kind of compatibility between the two languages.The study sheds light on the concept of sarcasm in some verses of the Glorious Quran in an attempt to understand its purpose meaning and clarify the differences involved in its translation into English language. The study aims to present some conceptions of sarcasm and take them into consideration in observing the original texts for the purpose of showing whether the translators are able to properly translate the implicit meanings of sarcasm.The study aimed at producing a comparison and analysis of how irony is used in both languages (Arabic and English). It also came to the assumption that sarcasm leads to some potential problems for translators. It concluded that the diversity in translations depends on the translator’s understanding of the meaning of the original text.The viva’s committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Hala Khaled Negm, and the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Yasser Younis Abdulwahed from the College of Islamic Sciences at University of Mosul and Assistant Professor Dr. Ihsan Mudar Mahmoud from University of Tikrit, under the supervision and membership of Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Hamoud.
