1.College in brief
Brief History of the College
The College of Arts at the University of Mosul stands as a leading institution in Iraq, established in 1966 to serve as an academic beacon dedicated to the humanities and intellectual sciences. It plays a crucial role in consolidating the cultural and civilizational identity of both the Mosuli and Iraqi society at large. Since its inception, the college has committed to a scientific mission rooted in integrating the study of ancient civilizational heritage with engagement in the evolving scene of modern human thought. This approach has positioned it as one of the foremost institutions in knowledge production and fostering interrelation between the past and the present.
The college is distinguished by its diverse academic departments, which include History, Arabic Language and Literature, Philosophy, Sociology, Media, Information Technology, and Translation. Additionally, it encompasses departments for foreign languages such as English, French, and Turkish. Each department is dedicated to offering comprehensive academic programs that keep pace with advancements in scientific research and meet the intellectual and cultural needs of society. For instance, the History Department highlights Mosul’s civilizational legacy as an Assyrian and Islamic metropolis, while the Arabic Language is taught as a vessel for Arab and Islamic literary heritage. The Philosophy Department delves into the trajectories of human thought and logic, and the Media and Information departments contribute to developing digital and communication skills essential for the modern era.
The college hosts an elite cadre of distinguished professors and researchers and continuously strives to develop its programs and curricula in line with modern academic standards, without abandoning its authenticity and deep connection to the city’s roots. Mosul, renowned for its cultural and religious diversity, provides an inspiring environment for research and study. Within the college, multiple streams of cultures and ideas converge, reflected in pioneering scientific projects and documentation initiatives that seek to preserve local dialects, social customs, and traditional architecture.
In the context of the difficult circumstances the city has endured, particularly during the years of terrorism and destruction that affected the University of Mosul and its colleges, the College of Arts demonstrated its resilience and capacity for renewal. It successfully rebuilt its departments and libraries, reaffirming its role as a vital intellectual and cultural center that contributes to the reconstruction of individuals and consciousness, not merely physical structures.
Today, the College of Arts not only graduates students but also cultivates a generation capable of critical thinking, committed to protecting heritage, and empowered to shape the future. In doing so, it embodies an academic model that respects authenticity while embracing modernity, continuously fulfilling its mission in service of knowledge and society.
