Historical Background-Dept. of History

A Historical Overview:
After the opening of the College of Arts for Humanities on September 29, 1966, the college was called (The College for Humanities) and it was administratively affiliated with the University of Baghdad until 1967, when the University of Mosul became a separate one. Shortly afterward, the Department of History opened as one of the first four departments that opened at that college, i.e., the Dept. of History, the Dept. of Arabic Language, the Dept. of European Languages, and the Dept. of Economics. The Dept. of History did not have a head, but ʿImᾱd ʿAbdul-Salᾱm, a historian and the then Dean of the College of Arts administrated it for one year. One-year later, Prof. Dr ʿᾹmir Sulaīmᾱn took charge of the department, and next came Dr Mufīd Muḥammad Nurī in 1969, Dr Khīzir al-Durī in 1973.
Since October 2024, the department has been headed by Prof. Dr. Mahmood Saleh Saeed, and the department’s administrative body comprises: Prof. Dr. Mahmood Saleh Saeed (Head of the department), who holds a doctoral degree from the College of Arts, Mosul University, obtained in 2007; the assistant department head, Lecturer Dr. Ammar Manhal Mohammad, who holds a doctoral degree from the College of Arts, Mosul University, obtained in 2021; the further studies head, Assistant Prof. Dr. ‘Immad Kamil Mar’I, who holds a doctoral degree from the College of Arts, Mosul University, obtained in 2009; and the head’s secretary, Miss Istabraq Amer Thanun. The faculty members of the department are divided into various subcommittees to fulfill their tasks jointly. The department has a council and several committees, including the scientific committee, further studies committee, examination committee, checking committee, quality assurance committee, guidance committee, media committee, symposiums, workshops and seminars committee, and student activities committee. Additionally, there are many temporary committees that are formed as needed.
