College of Dentistry Hosts a Workshop on Combating Violent Extremism in Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals

 

On Monday, December 1, 2025, the College of Dentistry at the University of Mosul had the honor of hosting Prof. Dr. Raqeeb Mohammed Jasim, faculty member at the College of Law – University of Mosul and Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair at the University of Mosul, in a specialized workshop titled: Violent Extremism… Its Causes and Threats to Society.

The workshop, organized by the College in cooperation with the Presidency of the University of Mosul – Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit, came in response to national and institutional directions aimed at strengthening community awareness and fostering a culture of moderation among students and academic staff.

During the workshop, the lecturer discussed the concept of violent extremism, its psychological and social causes, methods of treatment and prevention, and emphasized the vital role of educational institutions in shaping youth awareness and protecting them intellectually from extremist ideologies by integrating curricula that promote the values of tolerance, dialogue, and respect for diversity.

The workshop contributed to advancing several Sustainable Development Goals, including:

Goal 1: No Poverty
Goal 4: Quality Education – by raising awareness and building the capacities of academic and student communities.
Goal 5: Gender Equality
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities – by reinforcing a culture of tolerance and social cohesion.
Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – through supporting civic values and combating hate speech.

At the conclusion of the event, an open discussion was held between the lecturer and attendees, during which participants emphasized the importance of holding such awareness workshops regularly due to their positive impact on enhancing national belonging and fostering a peaceful and cooperative society.

This workshop is part of the University of Mosul’s integrated strategy to promote the values of moderation and social responsibility, and to highlight the role of higher education in building a secure and stable future for Iraq.
