Master’s Thesis Defense at the College of Dentistry on Temporary Restorations

The Department of Prosthodontics at the College of Dentistry, University of Mosul, witnessed on Sunday, 17 May 2026, the defense of the master’s thesis entitled: “Evaluation of Some Physical and Mechanical Properties of 3D-printed, CAD/CAM, and Conventional Provisional Fixed Prosthesis Resins”
The thesis, submitted by the student Hussein Haider Qasim, aimed to evaluate selected physical and mechanical properties of temporary fixed prosthetic resins fabricated using three different methods: three-dimensional printing technology, CAD/CAM technology, and the conventional technique, with comparative assessments conducted to determine the performance and laboratory characteristics of these materials.
The findings of the study revealed statistically significant differences among the various fabrication methods. Three-dimensionally printed restorations demonstrated the highest flexural strength, particularly at printing angles of 0° and 15°, whereas the conventional technique recorded the highest surface hardness values. In addition, CAD/CAM technology achieved the best results in terms of reduced surface roughness, as well as superior color stability and stain resistance.
Conversely, the three-dimensionally printed specimens exhibited greater surface roughness and higher susceptibility to color change, especially at a 45° printing angle. Regarding water absorption, the results showed no significant difference between the CAD/CAM and conventional groups, while the three-dimensionally printed materials demonstrated lower solubility compared with the other fabrication methods.
The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Radwan Hummadi Hassan, with Assistant Professor Dr. Ammar Khalid Jamal Al-Din and Assistant Professor Dr. Abdullah Jassim Mohammed serving as members. Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Abdul Latif Abdullah served as both supervisor and committee member.
The thesis was accepted following the completion of the required revisions.
