Speech of the Dean of the College

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen…

At the outset, we would like to welcome you to the website of the College of Dentistry / University of Mosul, hoping that you will find information, data and useful activities related to the college. The College of Dentistry / University of Mosul was established to be a scientific and knowledgeable edifice in addition to the pioneering scientific process of the University of Mosul in 1982 with teaching cadres numbered on the fingers of the hand (four teachers). The college was opened in its first year in the building of the College of Medicine in Mosul on the right bank of the city of Mosul. It included one scientific department, which was the Department of Basic Dental Sciences. The college then expanded again in 1984 as an institution for another scientific department, the Department of Clinical Dental Sciences. Then the college expanded for the third time in 1985 to include two other scientific departments split from the Department of Clinical Dental Sciences; the departments of Conservative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Moreover, within the strategy of the college and its great ambitions and the increase in the number of students and teaching staff, it was necessary to expand for the fourth time in 1987 to establish two other important scientific departments ; the departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and department of Pedodontics, Orthodontics and Preventive Dentistry to complete the important basic and clinical departments in the college in line with the goals set for the College of Dentistry.  The scientific march of the college continued, as the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Mosul Medicine contributed to providing classrooms and educational clinics to train and qualify our students in the educational hospitals of the city of Mosul, until our college was able to open a building of a distinguished architectural nature, as well as the development of model educational medical clinics in a distinguished location in line with the requirements of the dental departments modern specialization, and equipped with the latest medical and diagnostic devices of solid international origins and to meet all the scientific and medical requirements of our dear students in 1990. The college was keen, within its goals and development plans, to create postgraduate studies for the first time represented by a master’s program in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics for the academic year 1994-1995 (The number of the accepted students at that time was only 4 students afterwards in which the rest of the specializations (Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics , Oral and Dental Radiology) would be developed in the subsequent years and to complete the journey of revitalizing the program continuing education in the Ministry of Health and in support of its health cadres in various specialties of Oral and Dental Health, our college initiated the development of a Professional Diploma Program in the Specialty of Conservative Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, and in the specialty of Oral and Dental Radiology in the academic year 2005-2006.  In order to supplement the scientific and academic process in our beloved Iraq with everything that would effectively contribute to the development of scientific and practical knowledge for the country’s youth, facilitate university education options and increase academic study opportunities for Master’s degree holders, the college initiated the development of a Doctoral Study in the specialty of Philosophy in Dental Sciences in the academic year 2010-2011 in Clinical Dental Specialties.  Today, after this steady march, it has become one of the requirements of the stage to fortify the college through the application of a number of decisions and directions, and the full openness to the community with the capabilities of the college to advance the reality of Oral and Dental Health, not through traditional treatments, but rather from advanced and accurate treatments in various specialties, which included the development of a number of Subspecialty units.  Also, the College, and within the general directions of the Ministry, has adopted the (Study in Iraq) project to provide scholarships for foreign students in preliminary and postgraduate studies in its five departments. It is not hidden from everyone the concern that occupies the administration of the college from obtaining local and international accreditation to bridge the college with the global scientific reality in the field of dentistry and supporting specialties.  It also included trends towards the use of sustainable development principles and policies. Today, the college has taken upon itself to bridge this path to help a number of young colleges to advance them through a number of twinning and cooperation agreements.  Today, the college is part of a system of rigorous evaluation exams for various stages and academic subjects to achieve the highest evaluation scores for the level of graduates. The college has been keen to adhere to the standards of scientific sobriety and academic accreditation by applying the laws and instructions in force from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, including encouraging its professors to engage in teaching methods courses, lectures, seminars and specialized workshops, and to participate in scientific, medical, sports and humanitarian conferences and urging teachers to interact and participate in scientific discussions. For postgraduate students, opening up to all colleges and universities, and exchanging experiences. In addition to scientific activities, the College of Dentistry is one of the colleges that are recognized for its students social and charitable activities throughout the year.
