Master’s Thesis Discussion on the Effectiveness of Clear Aligners in Closing Maxillary Anterior Diastema

The Department of Pediatric, Orthodontic and Preventive Dentistry at the College of Dentistry, University of Mosul, held a master’s thesis discussion on Thursday, 29 October 2026, entitled:
“Effectiveness of Conventional Clear Aligners in Correcting Three Patterns of Maxillary Midline Diastema: An In Vitro Study”
The thesis was submitted by postgraduate student Sarah Faraj Khalaf Hussein Al-Sayer.
The study aimed to evaluate and compare the biomechanical performance of two commonly used materials in clear aligner fabrication, namely Taglus Premium and CA Pro, when used to close three different patterns of maxillary midline diastema.
The study investigated the accuracy of tooth movements, including intrusion and extrusion, crown tipping, mesial tooth movement, root displacement, and reciprocal movement of the maxillary incisors. It also examined the effects of aligner fit, the type of orthodontic attachments, and aligner material on treatment predictability
The findings revealed that both materials, Taglus Premium and CA Pro, were capable of closing maxillary midline diastema across all the patterns investigated in the study. However, statistically significant differences were observed between the planned and achieved tooth movements in most types of orthodontic movements, indicating variations in the accuracy of the movements achieved compared with those intended.
The results also demonstrated that the use of orthodontic attachments generally contributed to improving the accuracy and predictability of tooth movement, while the performance of the two materials varied depending on the type of tooth movement and the diastema configurations investigated. Overall, both materials achieved clinically acceptable outcomes; however, neither achieved complete correspondence with the planned tooth movements.
The findings of this study provide valuable scientific insights that may contribute to improving the selection of materials used in clear aligner therapy and the planning of orthodontic cases, thereby enhancing the predictability of clinical outcomes and supporting the development of treatment approaches and improvements in their efficiency.
The discussion committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Zana Qadir Omar, with Assistant Professor Hind Tahir Jarjees and Assistant Professor Mahmoud Khalid Ahmed serving as members. Assistant Professor Dr. Zaid Burhan Saeed supervised the thesis.
At the conclusion of the discussion, the thesis was approved subject to the completion of the required revisions.
