Under the patronage of Professor Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, and under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Saba Khair Al-Din Ibrahim, Director of the Center,

Coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,

the Environmental Research Center held a scientific awareness workshop on Monday, June 30, 2025, entitled “The Scourge of Drugs and the Reasons for Their Spread in Iraqi Society.”

The workshop was organized in cooperation with the Center’s Sustainability Unit and the Relations and Media Department of the Nineveh Police – Friends of the Interior Division, with the participation of volunteers from the network of volunteer teams across all governorates of the country.

The lecture was delivered by Major Hardan Mohammed Khalaf, Director of the Friends of the Interior Division.

The workshop addressed the factors that have contributed to the spread of the drug phenomenon, including security and political conditions, wars and conflicts, weak border controls, widespread poverty and unemployment, and the decline in family supervision and the lack of proper guidance for children.

It addressed the devastating effects of drug abuse, including health-related damage to the nervous system and psychological distress, and social impacts such as family disintegration and isolation, in addition to economic damage such as resource depletion and decreased productivity at the individual and societal levels.

The workshop aimed to spread a culture of community awareness and encourage citizens to report any activities related to drug promotion or abuse. It also aimed to promote moral and religious values ​​in confronting this dangerous phenomenon.

At the conclusion of the lecture, awareness leaflets were distributed about the dangers of drug abuse. Volunteer teams network volunteers also carried out a series of field activities related to first aid, including dealing with emergency situations that required rapid and immediate intervention.

The workshop concluded with the presentation of an honorary shield to the Director of the Friends of the Interior Ministry Division, Major Hardan Mohammed Khalaf, in appreciation of his distinguished efforts and effective cooperation in making the workshop a success
