The Environmental Research Center continues to provide training lectures for students of the College of Environmental Sciences and Technologies

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), the Environmental Research Center at the University of Mosul continued its summer training program for students of the College of Environmental Sciences and Technologies on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
The program included two scientific lectures. The first, titled “Methane and its Role in Climate Change,” was delivered by Dr. Zakaria Nafie Mahmoud. It addressed the importance of reducing methane emissions as a key measure in combating climate change. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, and its heat-trapping capacity is more than 80 times greater than that of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, despite its shorter duration in the atmosphere. He pointed out that its emission sources include agriculture, fossil fuels, landfills, and wetlands, emphasizing that reducing its emissions is one of the fastest solutions to slowing the pace of global warming.
The second lecture, titled “Measures Taken to Protect the Environment from Desertification,” was presented by Assistant Professor Nada Younis Taher. She highlighted the dangers of desertification and its negative repercussions on the environment and natural resources. She also outlined preventative and therapeutic measures that can mitigate the severity of this phenomenon, as well as the role of environmental awareness in limiting its spread.
