Department of Mining Engineering Organizes a Training Course on Building a Digital Model for Interpreting Surface and Subsurface Geological Formations

Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, the esteemed President of the University of Mosul, and under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Moan Hassan Abdullah, the Dean of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, and as part of the scientific activities organized by the Department of Mining Engineering at the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, a training course titled:
“Building a Digital Model for Interpreting Surface Geological Formations Similar to Subsurface Formations”
was launched on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, and will continue until June 23, 2025.
The course features the participation of Dr. Saad Waleed Saadi and Dr. Nihad Saud Najm.

The course aims to introduce participants to the principles of using digital models in geological studies and analyses, with a focus on their role in constructing subsurface sedimentary models that contain hydrocarbons and minerals.

The course topics are distributed as follows:

  • Day 1: Introduction to the concept of digital modeling in the study of rock outcrops
  • Day 2: Required data for model construction and methods of collection and analysis using VRGS software
  • Day 3: Applications and outputs in geological and petroleum studies
  • Day 4: Geological interpretations derived from the digital model
  • Day 5: Practical application and assessment of course outcomes

This course is part of the department’s efforts to enhance students’ and researchers’ skills in utilizing modern digital technologies in the field of applied geology.
