College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering

Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, the esteemed President of the University of Mosul, and the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Moan Hassan Abdullah, the respected Dean of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, the Department of Petroleum and Refining Engineering at the College organized a scientific training course entitled:
“Seismic Interpretation using Petrel Software.”

The course began on Monday, June 23, 2025, and continued until June 25, as part of the college’s ongoing scientific activities aimed at enhancing the skills of its staff and students.

The course aimed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of seismic interpretation and the role of seismic data in oil and gas exploration. It also provided hands-on training on identifying geological structures such as folds and faults through seismic sections. In addition, the course covered the steps of performing seismic interpretation using Petrel software, including an introduction to the software tools, the process of loading seismic data, and identifying seismic reflectors (horizons) representing boundaries between different geological formations.

The course lectures were delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Muneef Mahjoub Mohammed, who provided a comprehensive theoretical and practical explanation that enabled participants to acquire essential skills in this vital field.
