Remote Sensing Center Holds Scientific Workshop on the Impact of Plastic Pollution in Seas and Oceans and Ways to Mitigate It

Under the patronage of the President of University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Abdulrahman Ramzi Qubba, Director of the Remote Sensing Center, the Center organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Impact of Plastic Pollution in Seas and Oceans and Ways to Mitigate It” on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

The workshop was held to highlight the challenges associated with plastic pollution and its escalating effects on marine ecosystems. It also aimed to provide an integrated scientific perspective on the sources of plastic pollutants, their pathways within aquatic environments, and their impacts on biodiversity and overall environmental health.

The workshop sessions addressed the latest applications of remote sensing technologies and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in monitoring and tracking plastic pollution. In addition, effective strategies for reducing this phenomenon were discussed through the development of sustainable environmental policies, the enhancement of integrated waste management programs, and the promotion of public awareness regarding the importance of reducing plastic consumption.

The workshop witnessed active participation and constructive scientific discussions, contributing to the exchange of valuable ideas and opening new research horizons in the field of marine environmental protection.
