Remote Sensing Center Participates in a Master’s Thesis Defense at the University of Mosul

In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), Prof. Dr. Fawzia Mahmoud Ramou, a faculty member at the Remote Sensing Center, participated as a member of the Master’s thesis defense committee at the College of Computer Science and Mathematics, Department of Computer Science, University of Mosul.

The thesis defense was held on Monday, September 7, 2026, for the thesis entitled “Design of a Computer Vision System for Monitoring Human Behavior at the University of Mosul,” submitted by Fatima Abd Jasim.

The thesis focused on designing a computer vision system for monitoring and analyzing human behavior in the university environment, with particular emphasis on the automated detection of violent behavior from video footage.

The study employed artificial intelligence and computer vision techniques, utilizing the YOLOv8 model for person and violence-region detection, the Farneback Dense Optical Flow algorithm for motion analysis, and the Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) model for analyzing the temporal information of motion. The study further integrated spatial, motion, and temporal features to improve the detection of violent behavior.

The thesis aimed to design and develop a computer vision system capable of automatically detecting and monitoring violent behavior through video footage, thereby contributing to the advancement of surveillance systems and enhancing safety and security within the university environment.
