For Cancer Patients: University of Mosul Opens the First Radiation Therapy Device in the City

In an official opening ceremony on Monday, September 15, 2025, Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, announced the launch of the first linear accelerator for cancer treatment in the city of Mosul. The announcement was held at the university’s medical research centers, with the attendance of the French Consul in Mosul, Mr. Fabrice Deplion.
This opening marks a significant advancement in radiation therapy for tumors, providing a rare and advanced medical service to the residents of Nineveh. It helps alleviate the burden on patients who previously had to travel to other provinces for treatment, in addition to supporting the educational process and practical training for medical and science students, as well as researchers.
Several official and academic figures attended the ceremony including Mr. Abdul Qadir Al-Dakhil, Governor of Nineveh, Professor Dr. Mazahim Al-Khayyat, Chairman of the Parliamentary Education Committee, Dr. Delshad Ali Al-Shangali, Director of Nineveh Health Directorate, as well as Professor Dr. Abdul Rahim Ibrahim Jassim, the Assistant of the President of the University for Scientific Affairs, and Associate Professor Dr. Rafal Hassan Hamid, the Assistant of the President of the University for Administrative Affairs.
In his speech, the President of the University of Mosul emphasized that this step was the result of genuine partnerships between the university, Nineveh Governorate, Nineveh Health Directorate, the French Development Agency, and several international community partners. He expressed hope that this device would be the foundation for establishing a comprehensive research and treatment center that brings together doctors and researchers with international partners, with the goal of saving lives and creating hope.
