Digital Security First: A Specialized Seminar on Combating Cyber Extortion at the College of Computer Science and Mathematics

 

On Sunday, November 23, 2025, the College of Computer Science and Mathematics, in collaboration with the National Security Service / Nineveh Security Directorate, organized a specialized seminar on combating cyber extortion, presented by several officers from the service’s specialized department. The seminar was attended by a large number of faculty members, staff, and students of the college, aiming to enhance security awareness within the academic community to address the growing digital threats.

The seminar was held in recognition of the serious threat posed by cyber extortion, which is considered one of the most significant security challenges in the digital age, given its psychological, social, and legal repercussions on victims. The seminar focused on explaining the most common methods used by extortionists, including online entrapment techniques, and emphasized the importance of protecting personal information and not sharing sensitive content online.

The seminar also covered reporting mechanisms for cyber extortion cases and outlined the legal procedures for handling such incidents, contributing to raising digital awareness and empowering students and staff to take preventive measures to protect themselves from this type of crime.
