Protecting the Rights of Dormitory Students: Toward Safe University Accommodation and a Sustainable Learning Environment.

In an effort to promote human rights awareness and reinforce the principles of justice and equality within the university environment, the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research, in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit – Human Rights Division at the Presidency of the University of Mosul, organized a workshop entitled “Protecting the Rights of Dormitory Students” on Wednesday, 14 October 2026.

The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Nada Younis Taher and highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of university dormitory students and providing safe and appropriate accommodation that preserves their dignity and safeguards their rights. Such an environment contributes to psychological and social stability and helps create suitable conditions for students to continue their academic journeys.

The workshop also emphasized the importance of embedding human rights principles within university institutions and raising awareness of students’ rights and responsibilities. Particular attention was given to ensuring access to essential services in university dormitories, respecting students’ privacy, guaranteeing fair treatment, and establishing appropriate channels through which students can submit complaints and suggestions and have them addressed in accordance with established procedures.

Furthermore, the workshop stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among dormitory administrations, relevant university departments, and students. This shared responsibility is essential to fostering a university environment based on mutual respect and compliance with regulations, while helping address the challenges students may encounter during their residence in university dormitories.

The workshop aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being; SDG 4: Quality Education; SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation; SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities; and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
