College of Archeology discusses the military organizations in the Kingdom of Mari during the second millennium BC

The doctoral thesis entitled “Military Organizations in the Kingdom of Mari during the Second Millennium BC” was defended in the Department of Ancient Iraqi Languages ​​at College of Archeology, University of Mosul, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
Part of the viva was attended by Professor Dr. Yasmine Abdel Karim Muhammad Ali, Dean of the College of Archaeology, Mr. Saleh Hassan Ali, District Attorney of Mosul, Brigadier Abdullah Hussein Muhammad, Director of Community Police in Nineveh, Colonel Saadi Jassim Muhammad, Director of the Real Estate Department/ Ninawa Police Command, and Major Bahaa Abboud Daeef. Protection of facilities.
The study presented by the student Wissam Hamid Sabbah aims to identify the military organizations in the Kingdom of Mari at the beginning of the second millennium BC, at a time preceding the era of Hammurabi. The researcher find that the Babylonian influence was clear on the organization of the Mari army.
The study concluded with points that showed the level of the military aspect of the Kingdom of Mari and its military structure, given that this army had lived in contemporary times with the Babylonian army, especially during the reign of King Zimri-Lim. Among the results that were reached was that the head of the tribe or the sheikh of the tribe (Sukako) was authorized to choose the soldiers. (Fighters) and counting them.
The viva committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Hussein Dhaher Hammoud, and the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Yasser Jaber Khalil, Assistant Professor Dr. Yasser Hashem Hussein, Assistant Professor Dr. Muhannad Khalaf Jamin from Tikrit University/ College of Arts/Department of Archeology, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Mayser Fadel, with supervision and membership.
