Today, Monday, September 8, 2025, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, Dean of the College of Arts at the University of Mosul, chaired the committee for the master’s thesis discussion titled, “Intellectuals and Power in India,” which took place at the College of Education for Human Sciences.The committee included a selection of specialized professors. 2-The Political Role of Abdullah Gül: A Master’s Thesis

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Department of History at the College of Arts discussed a master’s thesis on Abdullah Gül and his political role in Turkey until 2014. The discussion was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, and a number of faculty members.The study, submitted by student Jamila Aswad Ali Huwait, delved into the life and influence of Abdullah Gül on Turkish politics. The thesis aimed to examine his impact on Turkey’s domestic policy, including political, economic, and social reforms, as well as his influence on the country’s foreign policy.The thesis committee was composed of the following members:

3-workshop on Digital Heritage and the Reconstruction of Mosul’s ancient Mosques

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit, hosted a workshop titled “Digital Heritage in the Reconstruction Efforts of Mosul’s Historic Mosques.”The lecture was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Youssef Al-omari from the Department of Architectural Engineering at the College of Engineering. The session was chaired by Professor Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, Head of the Department of History.The workshop highlighted the crucial role of digitalization in preserving and reconstructing Mosul’s heritage, aligning with sustainable development goals to protect the city’s cultural identity and historical memory. 4-Master’s Thesis: “Russia’s Stance on U.S. Policy in the Middle East, with Iran and Iraq

The Department of History at the College of Arts held a master’s thesis defense on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. The thesis, titled “Russia’s Stance on U.S. Policy in the Middle East, with Iran and Iraq as Case Studies (2001-2011): A Historical Study,” was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, and a number of faculty members.The study, submitted by student Ahmed Mohammed Hassan Jassim, examined the significance of Iraq and Iran and their pivotal roles in the policies of both the Russian Federation and the United States. Following the 2003 U.S. invasion, Iraq entered a new era, coming under American influence and dominance. This development significantly diminished Russia’s considerable prior influence in the country. Concurrently, Iran served as a political arena for Russian-American tension, particularly concerning the nuclear crisis.The thesis aims to highlight Russia’s position on U.S. policy toward two key countries in the Middle East, Iraq and Iran. It also explores the role Russia played in countering U.S. policy in these nations and the subsequent impact on the relationship between Russia and the United States.

7-Master’s Thesis Defense: The Role of Hadith Transmitters in the Islamic East

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the Department of History at the College of Arts held a master’s thesis defense for a dissertation titled “The Geographical Distribution of Hadith Transmitters in the Islamic East and Their Role in Disseminating Hadith from the Third to the End of the Seventh Century AH.”The defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, and several faculty members.The research, presented by student Farah Raad Hassoun, explored the geographical dispersal of musnid scholars (narrators of Hadith) across the Islamic East. It also examined their pivotal role in the transmission and dissemination of the Prophet’s traditions from the third to the seventh centuries of the Hijri calendar. The thesis’s primary objective was to shed light on the identities and contributions of these scholars in spreading the Noble Prophetic Hadith.

8-Department of History Kicks Off New Academic Year with Organizational Meeting

The Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, began the new academic year with an organizational meeting chaired by Professor Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed. He conveyed the Dean’s directives regarding the final preparations for the start of the academic year.The directives included a focus on forming the main and sub-committees within the department and distributing course materials to faculty members to ensure a smooth educational process. Professors were also encouraged to publish in reputable international journals and the college’s own journal, “Adab Al-Rafidain.”The meeting also emphasized the importance of opening new avenues for academic cooperation with history departments in other colleges and universities. Political and Civilizational Roles of Hanafi Scholars in Baghdad During the Abbasid Era (248-656 AH / 862-1258 AD): A Doctoral Dissertation The Department of History at the College of Arts recently held a doctoral dissertation defense titled “The Political and Civilizational Roles of Hanafi Scholars in Baghdad During the Abbasid Era (248-656 AH / 862-1258 AD).” The defense took place on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, and was attended by Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, Head of the Department, along with several faculty members.The dissertation, submitted by student Bahaa Ahmed Mohammed Al-Jubouri from the Department of History, explored the political and civilizational roles of Hanafi scholars in Baghdad. It aimed to uncover the contributions these scholars made to the intellectual, political, and social spheres during the Abbasid Caliphate. The study highlighted their close ties to state administrative and judicial institutions and their role in solidifying political structures.The study’s primary objective was to shed light on a crucial aspect of Baghdad’s political and civilizational history, namely the role of Hanafi scholars. Their influence wasn’t limited to jurisprudence and the judiciary; it also extended to managing state affairs and participating in political decision-making. 13-Workshop on the Fundamentals of the Persian Language

The Department of History organized an educational workshop titled “Fundamentals of the Persian Language.” The three-day course took place from September 30 to October 2, 2025.The workshop was held under the patronage of Professor Dr. Hatem Fahad Hano Al-Tai, Dean of the College of Arts, and the supervision of Professor Dr. Mahmoud Salih, Head of the Department of History.Delivered by Assistant Professor Tay Hatem Jasim, the course saw the participation of various personnel from the College and the Department of History. The curriculum covered several key areas, most notably the Persian alphabet and numbers, the correct pronunciation of certain Persian letters, and vocabulary related to body parts, cardinal directions, and flavors. Furthermore, participants were trained in the practical application of common Persian phrases.

The Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, organized a scholarly symposium on Sunday, September 21, 2025, titled “Biographical Books, Their Importance in Contemporary Studies, and Methods of Their Sustained Utilization.”The event took place in the College’s Al-Salam Hall, under the supervision of the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Hano Al-Tai, and the Head of the History Department, Professor Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed.

19-Department of History Conducts Field Visit to the Mosque of Prophet Yunus in Mosul

As part of the scientific and cultural activities organized by the College of Arts at the University of Mosul, the Department of History arranged a field visit to the Mosque of Prophet Yunus (Peace Be Upon Him). A number of the department’s faculty and students participated with the aim of observing the Mosque’s current state and monitoring the progress of the reconstruction phases of this ancient historical and religious landmark.The delegation was received by Dr. Ahmed Al-Omari, the Engineer overseeing the reconstruction project for both the Mosque and the University. Dr. Al-Omari provided a detailed presentation on the progress of the construction work and the key steps being taken to preserve the Mosque’s distinctive architectural and heritage character, recognizing its status as an important symbol of Mosul’s and the Islamic identity.The delegation was accompanied during the visit by Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Hano Al-Tai, Dean of the College of Arts, and Professor Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, Head of the Department of History. Both confirmed in their addresses the crucial importance of field visits in enriching students’ historical knowledge and linking the academic component with practical, applied activity on the ground. 20-Arts Member Translates Turkish Book on Pivotal Figure in Turkish Republic’s History

Assistant Professor Dr. Iman Ghanim Sharif, a faculty member in the History Department at the College of Arts – University of Mosul, has completed the translation of a Turkish book titled “Ismet İnönü: Hero of the National Struggle.”The book focuses on the biography of Ismet İnönü, one of the most prominent figures in the history of the modern Turkish Republic, who combined military and political leadership. He played a pivotal role in solidifying the foundations of the new state and shaping its directions before the official declaration of the Republic.The translator explained that her choice of this work was not accidental but was based on the importance of this figure for understanding the nature of Turkish political work and the establishment of its first institutions. She noted that translating such works from Turkish to Arabic contributes to enriching the Arabic library with original sources, providing researchers and academics with a deeper understanding of modern Turkish history and its political and intellectual interactions.This achievement comes as part of the College of Arts’ efforts to support the translation movement and build bridges of scientific and cultural communication between the Arabic and Turkish languages.

The Department of History at the College of Arts discussed a Master’s thesis titled “Hospitality Traditions in Al-Andalus (138-897 AH / 756-1492 CE)” on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. The Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Ta’i, the Head of the Department, Dr. Salih Mahmoud Saeed, and a number of the College’s faculty members attended part of the defense.The study, presented by student As’ad Siddiq Khattab in the History Department, addressed the role of hospitality in Al-Andalus, including the places of reception, the serving of food and drink, the offering of gifts and money, and the provision of necessary protection for the guest.The study aims to highlight the most prominent hospitality traditions followed in Al-Andalus and their role in creating an atmosphere of interaction and peaceful coexistence.

24- A faculty member participates in a Master’s thesis defense

The Head of the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Salih Saeed, participated as a member of the examining committee for the Master’s thesis titled: “British-American Competition in Iraq 1958–1968”, submitted by the student Fahd Huthal Al-Zuhairi. The defense took place at the College of Basic Education, University of Mosul, on Sunday, November 16, 2025.

25- History Department Conducts Academic Visit to Mosul University’s Central Library

The Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, conducted an academic visit to the Central Library.The Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahad Hano Al-Tai, participated in the visit, accompanied by a group of students and a number of teaching staff from the History Department, on Monday, November 17, 2025. During the visit, the students were briefed on the mechanisms of cataloging, archiving, and borrowing services. They also learned about the modern systems used in organizing resources and making them available to researchers.This visit is part of the academic activities plan adopted by the History Department to enhance students’ research skills and link theoretical knowledge with practical application.

26- Seminar on Urbanization and its Sustainability Across Ages

The Department of History in the College of Arts organized a discussion seminar on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, titled “Urbanization and the Sustainability of its Manifestations in Iraq Across Historical Ages.” A number of department professors participated in presenting the seminar, which was attended by a gathering of History Department faculty members and undergraduate and graduate students. They discussed the development of the manifestations of urbanization in Iraq and their importance in shaping the social structure through various historical stages.

The discussion committee was composed, in accordance with the university order, of Professor Dr. Muwaffaq Salem Nouri as Chairman, and membership of each of Asst. Prof. Dr. Khazal Yassin Mustafa, Asst. Dr. Muhannad Nafeh Khattab, and Asst. Dr. Muhammad Hamid Ismail (member and supervisor), and then the decision of the discussion committee was read and included the acceptance of the thesis and granting the student a master’s degree in history.

4- Today, Monday, September 30, 2019, at the University of Mosul / College of Arts / Department of History in Ibn Al-Atheer Hall, a discussion of the doctoral thesis in the field of modern history for the student Baidaa Ahmed Hazayran was held on the topic: The Israeli-American role in the Lebanese Civil War 1975-1983. This thesis shed light on an important stage in the history of modern Lebanon, especially the conflict that resulted in the formation of A new face for the state of Lebanon, which lived through difficult days during the civil war, and it also shed light on the hidden hands that were feeding this war and fanning the flames of sedition here and there. 9- اHistory Department Council Meeting
The Academic Committee of the History Department held a discussion session on January 21, 2020, to record the research titles of a group of professors within the department’s academic plan for 2019/2020. In light of this, the History Department held a faculty meeting attended by the department’s professors to discuss the conduct of end-of-course exams.
10- History Department Faculty Meeting. In implementation of the directives of the Dean of the College of Arts, Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afeen, and with the approaching start of the final exams in the department, the Head of the Department of History, Professor Dr. Nayef Muhammad Shabib, and the Department Rapporteur held a meeting with the teaching staff today, Thursday, April 27, 2023. The meeting emphasized the Ministry’s directives regarding the final examination mechanism for undergraduate studies, the setting of exam questions, and exam monitoring. The meeting also addressed the topic of postgraduate studies and the mechanism for supervision and discussions, in accordance with the instructions and regulations issued by the Ministry and the University Presidency.

2- Master’s thesis in the Department of History on (Prince Majd al-Dawla al-Buwayhi – a study of his biography, politics, and the conditions of his emirates) Today, Tuesday, September 20, 2022, the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, discussed the master’s thesis entitled (The Glory of the Buwayhi State – A Study of His Biography, Politics, and the Conditions of His Emirates). The discussion was attended by the Dean of the College of Arts, Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afeen, the Administrative Assistant Dean, Assistant Professor Dr. Safwan Nazim, and a number of college lecturers and graduate students.The study submitted by the student (Rehab Khaled Mohammed) dealt with the administrative, economic and social conditions during the reign of Majd al-Dawla al-Buwayhi. It also included the urban and scientific conditions during the reign of Prince Majd al-Dawla al-Buwayhi.The thesis aimed to study the origins of the Buyids as well as the biography of Prince Majd al-Dawla al-Buwayhi.The message concluded with a presentation of the most important results reached by the researcher.The discussion committee consisted of:

The student (Heba Zuhair Yassin) in the Department of History/Islamic History dealt with the biography of the Prophet in the book “Al-Tawdih for Explaining the Sahih Collection”, which is considered one of the largest explanations of the Sahih Collection and the primary source for many subsequent explanations. It is a scientific encyclopedia that contains valuable information in various aspects; in it Ibn Al-Mulaqqin preserved many important texts and quotes whose originals were lost or for…م It became a reference from which many contemporary and later commentators on Sahih al-Bukhari drew their narrations. The study addressed the conditions in Egypt during the era of Ibn al-Mulaqqin and the impact of those conditions on his life. His scientific biography, indicating his status among the scholars of his time, and his most prominent works, then collecting and studying the narrations of the Prophet’s biography in its Meccan and Medinan eras, with a study of Ibn Al-Mulaqqin’s method and resources in the Prophet’s biography. 7-Historical Knowledge and Its Relationship to Social Studies. The Department of Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance at the College of Arts held a training course entitled Historical Knowledge and Its Relationship to Social Studies. The course lasted for five days from April 13-17, 2025. The course was divided into five axes. On the first and second days, Dr. Shalal Hamid Suleiman and Dr. Iman Hamadi Rajab explained and clarified the relationship between sociology and history.On the third day, Dr. Suja Qahtan and Dr. Muhammad Walid explained and clarified the concept of social history. 10: PhD thesis on “The United States’ position on the military coups in Pakistan 1958-2008” The History Department at the College of Arts discussed a PhD thesis on the United States’ position on the military coups in Pakistan 1958 to 2008, on Thursday, April 10, 2025. Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afeen, Dean of the College, and a number of faculty members attended part of the thesis.The study, presented by Tariq Ibrahim Aswad, a student in the History Department, examined the United States’ stance on coup governments in Pakistan and how it dealt with these coups from 1958 to 2008.
The study aims to clarify the United States’ position on the phenomenon of military coups in Pakistan between 1958 and 2008.

The Department of History at the College of Arts held a PhD dissertation defense on “The Military and Security Institution in the Soviet Union 1928–1956” on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The session was attended in part by Prof. Dr. Hatim Fahd Hanno, Dean of the College, the Head of the Department Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, and a number of faculty members. The dissertation, presented by student Youssef Mohammed Mustafa from the Department of History, explored the military and security institution in the Soviet Union during the period 1928–1956. The study aims to demonstrate the political and cultural role of slaves in Egypt, as these slaves were owned by their masters. Additionally, they were preoccupied with conflicts, disturbances, and wars that occurred at that time, as some of these slaves separated from the Abbasid Caliphate and formed independent states with political and cultural significance.

The Master’s thesis titled “Islamic Markets and Their Organizations through the Book of Ahkam al-Souq by Yahya bin Omer Al-Andalusi ( 289 AH/901 AD)” was discussed in the History Department at the College of Arts, University of Mosul on Monday, November 4, 2024. It was attended by some post-graduate students and teaching staff from the college.
The thesis presented by the student Mahmoud Jalal Ahmed, has reviewed studying the legal and religious organizations included in the book “Ahkam al-Souq” and their role in regulating market activity and economic transactions. This was done by examining the issues directed to him in topics related to the market, covering various fields of financial activities, and extracting the jurisprudential opinions and interpretations deposited by the jurist Yahya bin Omer in his book through the answers he provided, highlighting them, and linking them to the economic reality.
The study aimed to
1- Establishing the legal and legislative market regulations and the Hisbah system and benefiting from this book.
2- Highlighting the great effort made by Muslim jurists since early times in codifying and regulating economic relations in Muslim societies at a time when others were stumbling in the darkness of ignorance.

The Master’s thesis titled “Badush until 2003 – A Study of its Social and Economic Conditions” was discussed in the History Department at the College of Arts, University of Mosul on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. The thesis, presented by student Muhammad Tahsin Bashir, addressed the topic “The Envoys of the Rightly-Guided Caliphate to the Arab Tribes from 11-23 AH / 632-644 AD.” It addressed the political, military, economic, educational, and administrative aspects of Islamic missions to the Arab tribes and their development with the beginning of the development of the Arab Islamic state. The Ridda Wars had a clear impact on the scarcity of this type of mission, and Islam brought about changes that had a significant impact throughout the world. The study aims to introduce the reader to what is meant by an envoy and the tasks of the envoy during the era of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Department of History at the College of Arts at the University of Mosul discussed a doctoral dissertation entitled “Research Trends in the American Journal of Mamluk Studies (1997-2021): A Quantitative Study” on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afin, Dean of the College, and a number of faculty members attended the discussion. The dissertation, presented by the student Muhammad Adel Sheet Al-Juhaishi, addressed research trends in Mamluk history by Orientalists in the American Journal of Mamluk Studies, published by the Middle East Documentation Center at the University of Chicago. The importance of the journal stems from its status as the first specialized Western journal. The journal is dedicated to a specific era in Islamic history, the Mamluk era, and has been regularly published since 1997. Another advantage of the journal is that it is available online in full for researchers and those interested in the Mamluk era. The researcher adopted a new approach to addressing the topic, namely the quantitative approach, by developing databases on Microsoft Access. The Department of History at the College of Arts at the University of Mosul discussed a doctoral thesis on Sunday, September 29, 2024, on “Characteristics of the Islamic Personality in the Arabic and Arabized Writings of Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi until the End of the Eighth Century AH.” Professor Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afeen, Dean of the College, and a number of faculty members and graduate students attended the discussion. The study, presented by student Ilaf Muhammad Ahmad Ibrahim al-Jubouri, aimed to identify the characteristics of the Islamic personality in the Arabic and Arabized writings of Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi until the end of the eighth century AH/fourteenth century AD. It aimed to highlight, extract, and explain these characteristics, such as calling to God, asceticism, renewal, reform, and guidance, leadership, academic achievement, and scientific erudition, in addition to moral traits. A common denominator united these personalities: they existed during a period when the Islamic world was most in need of them, fulfilling their roles to the fullest extent, whether religiously, politically, scientifically, or socially. The study includes an introduction and four chapters, as well as an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction reviews the biography of Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi. The first chapter addresses the religious characteristics of the Islamic personality, while the second chapter addresses the leadership characteristics of the Islamic personality. The third chapter addresses the scientific characteristics of the Islamic personality. The fourth chapter reviews the social characteristics of the Islamic personality in the writings of Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi.

The Faculty of Arts discussed on Sunday, September 22, 2024, a master’s thesis in modern history on: (Arabs in Turkey 1923-2002: A Historical Study), which was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and a number of lecturers and graduate students. The study, presented by the student (Lubna Raad Mahdi Al-Taie) from the History Department, aimed to shed light on the Arabs in the Turkish Republic and the history of their presence in Anatolia from ancient times to the present time, the most prominent political developments that occurred in the region and their impact on the status of Arabs in Turkey, the policy of the republican system in Turkey, which was established after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire towards them, and the nature of their presence within the framework of this new political system, which was formed according to the foundations of the Turkish national system and its impact on their political, economic, social and cultural presence in the country. The study included four chapters, in addition to an introduction and a conclusion. The first chapter reviewed an introduction to the Arab presence in Anatolia since the Islamic conquest until 1923, the beginning of the founding of the Turkish Republic, while the second chapter dealt with the most prominent Arab tribes in Turkey and the areas of their presence in Turkey, and the third chapter dealt with the problem of the Alexandretta Sanjak and its impact. The fourth chapter reviewed the role of Arabs in Turkey’s political, economic, social, and cultural spheres, as well as the stance of successive Turkish governments toward Arabs in Turkey during the study period. 24- A doctoral thesis in the College of Arts on loyalty and rebellion in the Ayyubid state from 569-658 AH/1173-1260 AD.
The College of Arts at the University of Mosul discussed a doctoral thesis on loyalty and rebellion in the Ayyubid state. On September 5, 2024, Professor Dr. Muhammad Ali Muhammad Afin, Dean of the College, and a number of faculty members attended the discussion. The thesis, presented by student Arshad Salem Sheet, a history major, covered the academic subject. The study addressed loyalties and rebellions against authority in the Ayyubid state, which were one of the reasons for the persistence of the Crusader threat in the Levant and Egypt for nearly two centuries. The study aims to shed light on the princes’ rebellions and their appeasement of the Crusaders, and to demonstrate the danger these conspiracies posed to Islam. The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Nasser Abdul Razzaq Al-Mullajesem, and included Professor Dr. Omar Ahmed Saeed, Professor Dr. Faiz Ali Bakhit, Assistant Professor Dr. Nashwan Mohammed Abdullah, and Assistant Professor Dr. Saddam Hussein Khadir. In recognition of Baghdad’s designation as the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2025, the Department of History, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Arts, organized a scholarly symposium. The event, titled “The Civilizational and Historical Role of the Capital Baghdad in the Islamic Eras,” was held in Ibn al-Atheer Hall at the College on the morning of Thursday, May 29, 2025. The symposium was attended by Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, Dean of the College of Arts, and numerous faculty members. 26- Department of History Organizes Diverse Activities on the Importance of Afforestation In 29 May and 1 June 2025.

 The Department of History at the College of Arts organized a discussion panel and a field lecture titled “The Importance of Afforestation in Islamic Civilization,” with the participation of a number of the department’s faculty members and the attendance of first-year undergraduate and master’s students.The event commenced with a discussion panel that delved into the historical, religious, and environmental aspects of afforestation in Islamic civilization. Lecturers offered scholarly insights into the role of trees in Islamic urban planning and their significance in maintaining ecological balance, presenting evidence from historical Islamic cities.The discussion panel was followed by a field lecture held at an environmental site near the college, In 29 May and 1 June 2025  delivered by the Head of the History Department, Professor Dr. Mahmoud Salih Saeed, and the rapporteur of the department, Dr. Ammar Manhal. 29- Dean of Arts College Monitors Health of Nigerian Student Ibrahim Abubakar Following Surgery

In alignment with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and with direct guidance from the Presidency of the University of Mosul, emphasizing the importance of caring for students and monitoring their health and social conditions, a delegation from the College of Arts, led by the Dean, visited Ibrahim Abubakar, an international student from the Republic of Nigeria. In response to an invitation from the Dean of the College of Arts, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Taie, members of the History Department, including professors, staff, and students, organized a voluntary cleanup campaign on Tuesday, June 23, 2025. The campaign covered various departments of the college. The campaign aims to promote a clean and healthy academic environment and instill a culture of teamwork and social responsibility on campus, as part of supporting sustainable development goals. The campaign witnessed active participation from faculty and students, with cleaning activities focusing on classrooms, corridors, and the internal and external courtyards of the departments, amid a positive atmosphere and a high spirit of cooperation. 39- Head of the History Department at the College of Arts Participates in a Historical Tour to Support Tourism in Old Mosul

Professor Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, Head of the History Department at the College of Arts, participated in an evening tour organized by the “Places of Iraq” team on Friday evening, July 4, 2025. The tour was organized in cooperation with the Nineveh Tourism Directorate, represented by the Director of Relations and Media, Dr. Ikhlas Dawood Al-Saleem, and included tour guide Harith Firas and Mr. Bilal Saadi. The tour aimed to promote tourism and support the cultural and historical heritage of Mosul.The tour began in the alleys of the Old City, where Dr. Mahmoud gave a detailed explanation to the participants about the most prominent archaeological and religious sites, including the Al-Musafa Mosque, the first mosque in Mosul and the fifth mosque in Islam, and the Great Mosque of Al-Nuri, in addition to the old markets and heritage arches that the city embraces.The tour was attended by academic figures and a group of Mosul families and those interested in archaeological tourism. It also included an introduction to so-called “black tourism” by viewing the destruction left behind by the terrorist organization ISIS in the region. On Tuesday, July 9, 2025, the Department of History at the College of Arts discussed a Master’s thesis titled “The Crimean Peninsula Between the 3rd AH/9th CE and 9th AH/15th CE Centuries.” The session was attended by Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, Dean of the College, Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, Head of the Department, and several faculty members.The study, submitted by student Khalil Ibrahim Mohammed Hussein in the Department of History, explored the geographical, historical, economic, and religious aspects of the Crimean Peninsula. The thesis aimed to highlight the region of Crimea geographically, historically, economically, and religiously, as it played a significant role in an important era of Islamic history.

41- PhD Dissertation on “The Policy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Towards Internal Developments in Lebanon 1982-2008”

The Department of History at the College of Arts held a PhD dissertation defense on the topic of “The Policy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Towards Internal Developments in Lebanon 1982-2008” on Thursday, July 31, 2025. The defense was attended by Professor Dr. Ahmed Fakkak Al-Badrani, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities; Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul; Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, Dean of the College; and several faculty members.The study, presented by student Mohammed Ahmed Fakkak, examined Saudi policy towards the political and military developments in Lebanon. It covered the Saudi position on the 1982 Israeli war on Lebanon, Saudi diplomacy to end the civil war in 1989, Saudi policy toward the political and military developments in Lebanon between 1990 and 2000, the Saudi stance on the 2006 Israeli aggression on Lebanon, and the Kingdom’s policy toward the Lebanese political crisis of 2007-2008, which concluded with the signing of the Doha Agreement and the election of Michel Suleiman as President of the Lebanese Republic.The dissertation aimed to analyze Saudi policy toward Lebanon’s internal events and developments, including political, military, and security affairs.

42- PhD Dissertation Defense: “Trends in Andalusian Studies in Spanish Orientalism: Al-Qantara Journal as a Model”

On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the History Department at the College of Arts held a PhD dissertation defense for a study titled “Trends in Andalusian Studies in Spanish Orientalism: Al-Qantara Journal as a Model.”The study, presented by student Salih Salim Ibrahim, examines orientalist studies published in Al-Qantara Journal, which serves as an extension of the Spanish journal Al-Andalus, founded in 1933 and specializing in Arab and Islamic studies.The dissertation aims to identify the research trends of Spanish and non-Spanish orientalists who published in Al-Qantara. This is achieved by tracing their undergraduate and postgraduate studies (Master’s and PhD), their graduating universities, and their professional affiliations. Furthermore, the study categorizes the research published in the journal into Andalusian and non-Andalusian studies, subsequently sub-dividing these by the precise specialization of the research topics.

43-Master’s Thesis: “The Spread of Islam in Africa from the Perspective of Orientalist Thomas Arnold”

The Department of History at the College of Arts recently held a master’s thesis defense on the topic of “The Spread of Islam in Africa from the Perspective of Orientalist Thomas Arnold.” The defense took place on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The event was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Mahmoud Saleh, and several faculty members.The thesis, submitted by student Zahraa Khalaf Hussein from the Department of History, examines the dissemination of Islam throughout Africa through the lens of Orientalist Thomas Arnold. The study primarily focuses on Arnold’s analysis of the peaceful methods of its spread, such as trade and proselytization. It also highlights the differences between the Orientalist perspective and the internal Islamic view regarding the religion’s expansion on the continent.The primary objective of the study was to comprehensively investigate the methods and means of Islam’s spread in Africa, as articulated through the works of Orientalist Thomas Arnold.

44-History Dept. Holds Joint Meeting to Enhance Academic and Research Programs

The Department of History in the College of Arts held a joint meeting of its Scientific and Postgraduate Studies committees on Sunday, August 10, 2025. The meeting was attended by a majority of the committees’ members, as well as several faculty members from the departmental council. The session reviewed a number of agenda items focused on advancing the department’s academic standing in both teaching and scientific research.

Key topics of discussion included:

  • Mechanisms for implementing a blended learning system in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, aligning with contemporary developments in university education methodologies.
  • The organization and distribution of courses for postgraduate students (master’s and doctoral levels) in the fields of Islamic and Modern History. This process was designed to follow a structured schedule that considers the specific specializations of the faculty members.
  • A discussion of several master’s thesis proposals, with necessary amendments made to prepare them for official approval.

The Dean of the College of Arts, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Taie, was present for part of the meeting. 45-Master’s Thesis Defense on “The Banu Al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah and Their Role in the Umayyad Era”

On Monday, August 11, 2025, the Department of History at the College of Arts held a master’s thesis defense for a study titled “The Banu Al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah and Their Role in the Umayyad Era.” The defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Taie, the Head of the Department, Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, and several faculty members.

The study, presented by student Hakam Hassan Muhammad Salih Ra’ouf Al-A’raji, explored the tribe to which the Banu Al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah belonged, the reasons for the rapprochement between the Thaqif tribe and the Umayyads, and the nature of the social and economic relations between the two sides.

The study aimed to shed light on the political and administrative roles of the sons of Al-Mughirah during the Umayyad era. It also examined the impact of their military role, both in supporting and opposing the Umayyad state. Additionally, the research classified the narrations of the Banu Al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah into several chapters, following the jurisprudential method used for classifying the noble prophetic traditions (Hadith).

46- A Doctoral Dissertation on Turkish Policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Department of History at the College of Arts held a doctoral dissertation defense on “Turkish Policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-2011).” The defense took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Ta’i, and the Head of the Department, Dr. Mahmoud Salih Saeed, were in attendance, along with several faculty members.The study, submitted by student Zaid Mahmoud Hilal Annaz Al-Badrani of the History Department, addressed the political, economic, and social relations between the two countries from 1992 to 2011. It specifically examined Turkey’s role during the Serbian War against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The dissertation’s objective was to highlight Turkey’s internal and external role, particularly through the UN Security Council, in ending the war.

Professor Dr. Omar Ahmed Saeed, a faculty member in the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, participated in the defense of a doctoral dissertation at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Tikrit.
