On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, the College of Dentistry discussed PhD dissertation entitled:The use of dental film of the middle phalanges of the third finger as a diagnostic tool for osteoporosis compared to the panoramic radiographic examination, hand and wrist, and DXAThe thesis was submitted by (Asmaa Bashir Rashid Al-Saffar), and the thesis aimed to verify the reliability and find an equation for predicting osteoporosis when using dental digital radiography (Dental Sensor size1) for the middle scapular bone of the third finger, which makes the dentist play a medical role in predicting osteoporosis in Postmenopausal women through the use of simple dental equipment in the dental clinic that can serve as a low-cost prior osteoporosis screening method as well as filter out postmenopausal women at risk of osteoporosis and then refer them if necessary for DEXA screening thus improving patients’ quality of life by Preventing patients from reaching the stages of bone fractures.The study demonstrated that imaging the middle scapular bone of the third finger using a dental radiographic sensor is a valuable method and tool in dental clinical practice and for predicting postmenopausal osteoporosis. Thus, the current study method may make the measurements of the index and gray bone density of the middle scapular bone of the third finger available at a large scale. wider in populations with limited access to DEXA to reflect skeletal bone density and may be used as a primary diagnostic in the evaluation of osteoporotic changes.The discussion committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Rayan Salem Hamed / Chairman / University of Mosul / Dean of the College of Dentistry.
