The College of Fine Arts Project / University of Mosul
About Nineveh Governorate:
The city of Mosul is considered one of the most prominent cities in terms of scientific, civilized, and artistic contributions throughout its long history, filled with pages of creativity across successive generations. It was a focal point for cultural interaction, with chroniclers noting the large number of students seeking knowledge due to the abundance of its schools, scholars, and artists.
In the mid-20th century, Mosul witnessed a major artistic renaissance in all artistic fields, where artists drew inspiration from its heritage, civilization, and historical elements. The resulting artworks were an honest expression of this.
The Iraqi city of Mosul lost many of its historical features and landmarks after it fell captive to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) for more than three years. During this period, it was subjected to a systematic destruction process in which the terrorist organization sought to erase and eliminate its cultural heritage, sometimes by demolishing its most prominent ancient landmarks, and at other times by subjecting its old part to shelling. However, it is a mistake to believe that the arts decline in times of war. The artist has a different opinion, suggesting that the drive to express oneself and one’s discontent is greater, which leads them to search for new ways of resistance through art. Therefore, all human conditions born from exceptional circumstances stimulate the artist’s brush and the actor’s creativity to always be up to the task.
About the College of Fine Arts:
The College of Fine Arts at the University of Mosul is an important scientific, cultural, and artistic institution in the Nineveh Governorate. Its duties include strengthening the artistic and intellectual capabilities of individuals and society. The college aims to create an academic environment that stimulates creativity and innovation.
Since its establishment in 1994, the college has been keen to affirm its presence in building and developing society. It includes three academic departments: the Department of Theatrical Arts, the Department of Plastic Arts, and the Department of Art Education, in addition to postgraduate studies in some departments. For this reason, the College of Fine Arts at the University of Mosul is considered one of the main and important outlets for graduating creative individuals and artists who enrich the artistic and cultural scene in the city of Mosul.
The college is moving towards excellence in its outputs by encouraging its students to excel and have a positive impact in all areas of work by providing them with academic and educational care, refining their talents, and pushing them to perform their duties toward society.
The college is also working to raise the level of quality and performance in education so that graduates can acquire knowledge and skills that may positively affect the job market.
The harsh conditions that Nineveh Governorate went through left clear marks on the city’s landmarks. This was an incentive for artistic institutions, and first and foremost the College of Fine Arts, to address these topics and employ them in different artistic frameworks and styles. This interest came as a result of the requirements for change and as a goal to create atmospheres different from what that dark period produced. The College of Fine Arts affirmed its conscious presence through theatrical performances, art exhibitions, and humanitarian projects that gave free rein to what was previously silenced. It carried the burden that the city and its residents suffered for three years. The result was new boundaries that art in Mosul had not previously known, and systems that worked to reorder and reframe the relationship with the audience.
