Art has played an extremely important developmental role throughout different eras and historical stages. While nearly 140 developing countries are searching for ways to achieve economic and political sustainability, and are adopting medium and long-term strategies to reach it, a contemporary art movement has emerged that aims to contribute to achieving the goals of sustainable development through the arts, as they are a mirror that reflects the social and cultural reality of people.
Art in itself is “development” and a wheel that pushes societies forward :
- Presenting developmental messages and addressing vital topics that touch on social and human needs.
- The artist transforms into a developmental practitioner, whether by using environmentally friendly materials or by presenting themes that serve the developmental issues and needs of communities, such as focusing on youth issues, identity, women’s empowerment, and heritage preservation, among others.
- Creating a partnership between development experts and the art community through art exhibitions that run parallel to discussion panels, debates, and workshops, bringing together the art audience with development experts and practitioners.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
Known officially as “Transforming our world,” these are a set of 17 goals established by the United Nations. These goals were mentioned in the UN General Assembly resolution on September 25, 2015, and on January 1, 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals were included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These broad goals are interconnected, although each has its own specific smaller targets. The SDGs cover a wide range of social and economic development issues, including poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, the environment, and social justice.
