Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, and the supervision of the Director of the Mosul Studies Center, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Nizar Al-Dabbagh, the Center, in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning – Sustainable Development Unit, held a continuing education course entitled: Towards a Sustainable Green Economy in Iraq: Vision and Prospects.

Lecturer: Assistant Professor Dr. Arouba Jameel Mahmoud

Course Director: Professor Dr. Maha Saeed Hameed
The course took place in the Formation Hall from April 13-14, 2026.

Course Objectives:

– To highlight the economic and social objectives of the green economy.

– To achieve sustainable development within an economic system based on sustainability principles.

Course Overview: The concept of a green economy refers to an economy that improves human well-being and achieves social equity while simultaneously mitigating environmental risks and ecological scarcity. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), through its definition of a green economy, emphasizes the need to consider the interactions between the green economy, society, and the environment. This means viewing the green economy, in its simplest form, as an economy that reduces carbon emissions, increases resource efficiency, and is inclusive of all social groups.

Course Sections:
– Day 1: This day will cover the definition of a green economy, its indicators (both environmental and social), highlighting its importance and requirements, and clarifying the differences between the green economy, the traditional economy, and green education. – Day Two: The session focused on environmental indicators in detail. It also addressed the challenges of transition and achieving sustainability in Iraq, including economic challenges, and explored a future vision for the transition to a green economy and the achievement of sustainability. The aim was to develop a future vision capable of facilitating this transition and ensuring its sustainability, while also adopting policies to promote sustainable development at all political, administrative, social, economic, and environmental levels. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 7, 8, and 13.
