From Refining to Industrial Integration

Under the patronage of the University President, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, Assistant Professor Dr. Ma’an Hassan Al-Majid, the Department of Petroleum and Refining Engineering at the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering held its second scientific symposium entitled:

“From Refining to Industrial Integration: Investing in Natural Gas and Developing Petrochemical Industries to Achieve Sustainability in Iraq.”

The symposium witnessed distinguished academic and professional attendance, featuring scientific lectures that addressed strategic themes in the energy sector. أبرزها refining processes in oil refineries and mechanisms for their integration with petrochemical industries, in addition to the current status of this industry and prospects for its development to maximize its economic value. The symposium also discussed the investment of natural gas, as well as the management and distribution of petroleum products and the associated challenges.

The symposium emphasized the importance of shifting from exporting raw materials to integrated manufacturing, and strengthening industrial integration between the refining and petrochemical sectors. This contributes to achieving environmental and economic sustainability, reducing resource waste, and supporting energy security in Iraq.

The symposium included two scientific sessions during which a group of professors and experts from the North Refineries Company and the Petrochemical Research and Materials Technology Center delivered specialized lectures. It concluded with a set of recommendations highlighting the need to adopt modern technologies, enhance investment in the gas sector, and create sustainable job opportunities for national talents.

This symposium comes as part of the College’s ongoing efforts to promote scientific research and bridge the gap between academia and industry, thereby supporting sustainable development in the energy and petrochemical sectors in Iraq.
