Department of Mining Engineering

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mining Engineering (Program code: BSc-DME) at the University of Mosul, College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program comprising 4 levels and 8 semesters, delivered under the Bologna Process with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The program totals 240 ECTS credits (30 ECTS per semester) across 51 modules, with 1 ECTS equivalent to 25 hours of student workload (6,000 total student workload hours), in accordance with the Modules Catalogue 2025-2026 and Program Catalogue 2025-2026.

Mining Engineering is considered one of the vital engineering disciplines concerned with the study and utilization of mineral and natural resources found within the Earth’s crust, including minerals, rocks, ores, and mineral deposits, contributing significantly to industrial and economic development. The academic program aims to provide students with fundamental and advanced scientific knowledge and engineering skills in the fields of mineral exploration, extraction processes, mine design, ore processing, and mining operations management, with emphasis on the technical, economic, and environmental aspects associated with the mining industry.

The program begins by establishing strong scientific and engineering foundations during the early stages of study through courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing, and earth sciences, in addition to the basic principles of Mining Engineering. In the advanced stages, the curriculum progressively focuses on specialized subjects such as surface and underground mining operations, rock mechanics, mine ventilation, exploration techniques, mineral reserve evaluation, ore processing, occupational safety, and mining management. The program emphasizes the development of students’ abilities in engineering analysis, problem-solving, and the application of modern software and technologies in mining engineering, and promotes scientific research skills, self-learning, teamwork, and professional communication. The curriculum includes laboratory and field training, and students are required to complete a graduation project (4th year) addressing an engineering problem or practical application in Mining Engineering under the supervision of specialized academic staff.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree in Mining Engineering by the University of Mosul.

The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF), or its equivalent, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR).

The Mining Engineering Department’s admissions capacity is determined within the admissions plan based on the department’s capacity, approved successively by the Academic Committee, the Deanship, the University, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The main requirements for student admission are:

  1. Iraqi nationality and year of birth: applicants must be Iraqi nationals.
  2. Iraqi high school diploma issued by an Iraqi high school accredited by the Ministry of Education.
  3. A medical certificate confirming applicants meet the necessary health requirements.
  4. Full-time enrollment: applicants must commit to being full-time students.
  5. Not accepting continuation studies transferred from another college.
  6. Non-Iraqi (incoming) students holding a certificate from an Iraqi high school are admitted according to the central admissions system.
  7. Acceptance of the top 10% of technical institute graduates.
  8. Admission of gifted students.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mining Engineering, students must successfully satisfy all graduation requirements, including:

  • Successful completion of all 51 modules (240 ECTS credits, 30 ECTS per semester) across the eight Bologna semesters, including institution and department requirements, in accordance with the curriculum structure.
  • Achievement of the minimum graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.
  • Successful completion of all required laboratory work, computer applications, field studies, and available summer training, where applicable.
  • Compliance with all academic regulations governing assessment, progression, and graduation as approved by MOHESR and the University of Mosul.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and transfer of academic credits are considered only in cases of student transfer or course equivalency, in accordance with the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Mining engineering is the study of geological processes, mineral origin, exploration, ore extraction, ore processing, ore transportation, mining technology, and mining management. Graduates obtain information on tectonics, sedimentology, structural geology, soil and rock mechanics, rock blasting engineering, mining engineering, and tunnel engineering to utilize basic knowledge toward realizing broader concepts. Upon successful completion of the Bachelor’s Program in Mining Engineering, graduates are expected to achieve the following Program Learning Outcomes:

GOs 1– An ability to distinguish, identify, define, formulate, and solve engineering problems in mining engineering by applying principles of engineering, science and mathematics.

GOs-2- An ability to produce engineering designs that meet desired needs within certain constraints by applying both analysis and synthesis in the design process.

GOs3- An ability to create and carry out proper measurement and tests with quality assurance, analyze and interpret results, and utilize engineering judgment to make inferences.

GOs4- An ability to skillfully communicate orally with a gathering of people and in writing with various managerial levels.

GOs5- An ability to perceive ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering cases and make brilliant judgments taking into account the consequences in worldwide financial, ecological and societal considerations.

GOs6- An ability to perceive the continual necessity for professional knowledge growth and how to find, assess, assemble and apply it properly.

GOs7- An ability to work adequately on teams and to set up objectives, plan activities, meet due dates, and manage risk and uncertainty.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor’s Program in Mining Engineering, graduates are expected to achieve the following Student Learning Outcomes:

The Department does not currently offer postgraduate programs in Mining Engineering; however, plans are underway to establish postgraduate programs in the field in the near future, subject to the applicable academic requirements and approval procedures. In the meantime, graduates of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mining Engineering are eligible to apply for Master’s and Ph.D. degree programs at other Iraqi universities offering related specializations, such as:
– Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Mining Engineering.
– Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Geology.

The Mining Engineering Program adopts the examination, assessment, and grading regulations approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Student performance is assessed through a variety of continuous and summative assessment methods, including:

  • Continuous assessment (quizzes, assignments, and classroom activities).
  • Midterm examinations.
  • Final examinations.
  • Laboratory reports and practical assessments.
  • Engineering design projects and coursework.
  • Summer training.
  • Oral presentations and seminars.
  • Graduation project assessment.

To be eligible for the award of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mining Engineering, students must successfully fulfill all graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of MOHESR and the University of Mosul, including:

  • Successful completion of all 51 modules (240 ECTS credits) specified in the curriculum, across the eight Bologna semesters.
  • Achievement of the minimum graduation requirements, including the required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), in accordance with the applicable regulations.
  • Successful completion of the Final Year Project (Graduate Project I and II, Semesters 7–8) and all required laboratory, computer application, and field study components.
  • Fulfillment of all academic and administrative requirements for the award of the bachelor’s degree.

The Bachelor’s Program in Mining Engineering is delivered entirely under the Bologna Process across eight semesters (4 levels), culminating in a two-part Graduate Project (Semesters 7–8). The program adopts a student-centered learning approach that integrates theoretical lectures, laboratory experiments, computer applications, field studies, and engineering design. Students are trained in engineering drawing and computer-aided design using AutoCAD, in addition to other computer applications relevant to mining engineering practice, delivered through the programs dedicated Computer I, Computer II, and Computer Applications in Mining and Metallurgy courses.

The Program Coordinator (Head of the Mining Engineering Department) is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Bachelor’s Program in Mining Engineering. The role includes overseeing the implementation of the curriculum, monitoring the achievement of the Student Learning Outcomes, coordinating academic activities among faculty members and students, supervising laboratory and field study activities, and ensuring alignment with the University of Mosul’s quality assurance policies, MOHESR regulations, and ICAEE accreditation requirements.
