Regional Studies Center’s Director Delivers a Lecture on the Worsening Water Scarcity in Iraq

The Director of the Regional Studies Center, Assist. Prof. Dr. Nawfal Qasim Al-Shahwan, gave a lecture entitled “The Worsening Water Scarcity in Iraq: A Study in Development and Water Footprint Policies,” on February 18, 2024.

The lecture aimed to review and analyze the dimensions of water scarcity in Mesopotamia, which is represented by water scarcity, which negatively affected agriculture, industrial operations, and environmental development in Iraq; as well as providing sustainable solutions and treatments including the necessary recommendations in this regard.

The lecture included several sections, the first of which was: water and agriculture, which involved a presentation of the worsening water scarcity that Iraq is facing, and the economic, social, and environmental impacts resulting from that. The second section dealt with the issue of economic development in this aspect, including the policy that must be adopted and how to manage water resources. The third section studied water policies and the water footprint, which touched on technological solutions to water scarcity, the use of the water footprint in economic development, water recycling and wastewater treatment, and the adoption of techniques to reduce water waste.
